Built in 1840 by a former Liverpudlian surgeon, this superb medieval-style fortress sits amid 25 hectares of green space on the shores of Lake Windermere. Now owned by the National Trust, the building has reopened to the public after several conversions. While the exterior is absolutely sumptuous, the rooms are entirely empty. They have nevertheless retained their period features, and are particularly popular with children, to whom many activities are devoted.
