This two-storey house, originally an apple store owned by the Braithwaites family, was built on a bridge to escape land taxes. Despite its modesty, this 17th-century architectural curiosity is one of the best-known and most photographed buildings in the entire Lake District. Its exceptional picturesqueness once attracted the attention of the painter Turner. It has a long history, having been in turn a tea room, a fabric store, a shoemaker's house and a chairmaker's house!
