Even before sinking into the depths of the earth, the building itself is worth a look. Built in a 1930s Art Deco style, it is inspired by Egyptian antiquity in several aspects. Its architect, Herbert J. Rowse, was a passionate Egyptian art lover and was greatly influenced by the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1921. On either side of the front door, two black basalt sculptures of squatters can be seen. One carries the moon, the other the sun, as a symbol of the Queensway Tunnel's activity, which continues day and night. Inaugurated in 1934, it connects the city of Liverpool with Birkenhead on the other side of the Mersey River. The engineers in charge of ventilation, lighting and security offer you the opportunity to discover its secrets, armed with a construction site helmet and your least precious clothes, very warm if possible! It must be said that this underwater giant is not very young... To be discovered: the engine room and the control room, where old installations as old as the world coexist with state-of-the-art tools. It is also the place to see from below the old walls of the first dock, built in 1715 by Thomas Steers. An interesting incursion into the heart of the city.
