RECLINING BUDDHA TEMPLE
Superb temple housing a magnificent reclining Buddha carved from a block of white jade
Nestled in the mountains about 15 kilometers north of Baoshan, at the foot of Mount Yunyang, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (卧佛寺) is one of the oldest and most revered in the region. Founded in the Tang dynasty, around 716, it houses a reclining Buddha statue carved from white jade, six meters long - the largest of its kind in China. Carved in a cave studded with stalactites, the atmosphere is one of serenity: incense wafts in the air, monks sing in the distance and the wind rustles in the pine trees.
