YUANTONG TEMPLE
Originally built in the Tang dynasty, it is one of Kunming's oldest Buddhist temples
Nestled at the foot of Luofeng Hill, Yuantong Temple is the city's largest and most ancient Buddhist sanctuary, revered for over a thousand years. Initially built under the Tang dynasty (618-907) as Putuoluo, it was enlarged by the Yuan (1276-1368) and then took on its present name: the Temple of the Understanding of All Things. Yuantong is in fact one of the 32 names of the goddess Guanyin, whose thousand-armed statue rests in a small pavilion with an octagonal roof, in the middle of a pool of water.
