BAMBOO MONASTERY
Founded in 639, this is the oldest monastery in Yunnan province, and houses clay statues dating from the century.
15 km from Kunming, the Bamboo Monastery is an invitation to serenity. Founded in 639, it is the oldest monastery in Yunnan province. The original temple was, however, rebuilt several times under the Ming and then the Qing, its current structure dating from the 15th century. Its main attraction is not its bamboo forest, but its 500 human-sized arhats (disciples of Sakyamuni), clay statues dating from the 19th century and intriguing for their offbeat realism. The courtyards, shaded by trees and magnolias, add to the charm of the place.
