A new New town in the New territories, Sha Tin is located 11 km north of Tsim Sha Tsui on the East Rail Line of the MTR. It borrows the tunnel under the hills of Kowloon and passes under the lion rocks (visible from downtown Kowloon). Another hill is named the A-Ma rock, evoking a mother wearing her child on his back. According to legend, she was a sailor who had waited in vain for her husband's return. The gods took her mercy and transformed it into a statue of stone. Sha Tin means Chinese'sandy fields '. The fertile estuary of the valley was formed by sediments torn by the Shing Mun River flowing into Tolo Bay. Immigrés immigrants came there in the th century.
