CASTLE-MUSEUM OF SAINT-GERMAIN DE LIVET
Castle-museum of the Tournebu family, surrounded by moat and garden, the museum with the furniture and collections of the family
A true architectural gem, located ten minutes south of Lisieux, classified as a Historic Monument and nicknamed "the wonder of the Pays d'Auge", no less! Surrounded by a moat and a delightful French-style flower garden, the Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet looks like something out of a fairy tale. It combines a timber-framed manor house dating from the late 15th century, with a late 16th-century building of Caen stone and Pré-d'Auge glazed bricks. An admirable château, but also a museum. Labelled a Musée de France, it presents the furnishings and collections of the family who donated the estate to the town of Lisieux in 1958, as well as the artistic and personal career of painter Léon Riesener, grandson of cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener and cousin of Eugène Delacroix. Unfortunately closed to the public for the time being due to a technical incident - there is talk of a reopening in 2025 - superb frescoes from the late 16th century, furniture and various works of art are preserved here. Although the château-museum is not currently open to the public, the park and garden are open to visitors, free of charge. Opposite the château, considered to be one of the most beautiful in Normandy, Abbé Marie's garden is an ideal place for a stroll, especially in fine weather. A green, soothing and peaceful park, with a tea room, in the heart of the Pays d'Auge, a must-see.
L'intérieur est très joliment meublé
Ne pas manquer de visiter ,face au chateau , l'église et son cimetière.
