PIAZZA SAN MICHELE
The square that formed the place of the meetings of the Consiglio Maggiore, the legislative body, bordered by the Palazzo Pretorio.
This beautiful square, the natural center of Lucca, was built on the site of the ancient Roman forum. Until 1370, during the communal period, it was the venue for meetings of the Consiglio Maggiore, the legislative body. It is flanked by the Palazzo Pretorio, or Podestà Palace, built in 1492, and the Church of San Michele in Foro, a superb example of Pisan-Luccan architecture, with its richly-decorated façade featuring loggias (galleries) and a large marble statue of Archangel Michael. It's a great place to relax over a coffee or aperitif.
