From Piazza Flaminio, you can reach the sanctuary of Santa Augusta, which overlooks the city, by a beautiful path (about a 40-minute walk) dotted with chapels bearing the names of Roman basilicas. They were built as ex-voto after the plague of 1630 and you have to climb a hundred steps to reach the sanctuary. The building dates from the 15th century. It has a bell tower which was originally the cap of a solid defensive tower. Three enclosures whose ruins are still visible had a strategic role in defending the city on the heights. The church is located in the second one, just below the ruins of what is thought to be the house of the Visigoth captain Matrucco. His daughter, now the patron saint of the city, was named Augusta. Inside, a 15th century frescoed chapel is dedicated to her, and her relics are kept there. Legend has it that she helped the destitute and the Christians persecuted by her despot father. But her fate was atrocious. She was imprisoned, tortured, burned, quartered on a wheel and even beheaded, but each time she escaped unscathed, saved by a miracle... Her body was then thrown off a cliff, but it was found intact at the top... where the sanctuary is built. Her father however managed to give her death... He then built him a tomb. Then he went into exile in Germany where he died soon after, racked by guilt.
