All the pastry cooks make a cake with the effigy of Saint Martin while the children are begging for sweets at every door.
This is one of the most picturesque but also one of the least known festivals of the Serenissima. It is a kind of transalpine Halloween that sees all the Venetian pastry cooks making a cake with the effigy of Saint Martin on his horse a few days before November 11th, while children knock on all the doors on D-Day making a din of all the devils with everyday objects such as pots and pans and their lids in order to collect a few pennies or sweets from passers-by or Venetians.
