It was at the foot of the former St. George's Hotel that former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated on 14 February 2005. The site keeps few traces of this terrible attack which killed a total of 22 people including the bodyguards of the politician, two ministers and passers-by. At 12.55 p.m., Rafik Hariri's convoy was blown up by an attack by a van containing an explosive charge. The road was closed to traffic for a long time, the road was asphalted and the crater of the explosion blocked. A monument has been erected in memory of the victims.
