The construction of the castle in a strategic position on the bay began during the wars between the maritime republics at the end of the 12th century. The Pisans then victorious over the Genoese built the first nucleus, later reinforced by the Genoese who raised the pentagonal tower, the main body and the ramparts. A last intervention in 1555 gave it its definitive appearance as a military fortress. Inside, a very beautiful Gothic style chapel dedicated to Sant'Anastasia. The castle is now home to the Geopaleontological Museum, created following the discovery of prehistoric footprints in the region.
