Museum known for housing a very rare example of triangular cloister in Genoa.
Housed in the former convent of St. Augustine, known for its rare example of a triangular cloister (in fact there was not enough space to build a square one), the museum holds the most important collection of sculptures in Liguria, from the 10th to the 18th century. Destroyed by a bombing during the last war, the complex was rebuilt and fitted out to house works of art from the most beautiful churches in Genoa. Among the highlights is the 14th-century Monument to Margaret of Brabant by Giovanni Pisano, a dazzlingly realistic masterpiece that is all that remains of the funerary monument that Emperor Henry VII erected in memory of his young wife. Also not to be missed is the other funerary monument of the doge Simon Boccanegra (15th century), a Genoese character celebrated in a beautiful opera by Verdi. Then the Abduction of Helen by Pierre Puget (17th century) seems to be alive, so much the poor Helen moves with all her limbs. And finally an impressive David the Victor (16th century) holding in a firm fist the decapitated head of Goliath. The collection is completed by a section dedicated to the sacred paintings of the Ligurian and Lombard primitives and by another dedicated to the azulejos, the shards of painted ceramics of Portuguese inspiration that once decorated Genoese homes. There are still some on the roof of the bell tower of the church of Sant'Agostino, now deconsecrated, which is a rare sight in the Ligurian capital.
