Gate marking the western limit of the medieval city in Genoa.
This gate marked the western limit of the medieval town. Later used as a prison, its two side towers were each incorporated into a palace and thus saved from certain destruction. In 1782, their appearance was significantly altered by stone cladding, and several rows of windows were added to the walls. Today, only the south tower retains its original appearance. Legend has it that, every Good Friday, a ghostly cart filled with damned souls would pass beneath it...
