SUAME MAGAZINE

In addition to the largest market in West Africa, Kumasi is home to Ghana's largest industrial zone: Suame, north of the city. There is a rather mind-boggling site here: the Magazine, a sort of huge mechanical engineering workshop covering 20 hectares, employing some 60,000 people (it is said). Mountains of engines, spare parts of all kinds and an incessant noise of hammering scrap metal punctuated by the smell of oil and paint. This is because 1,500 painters are working on the tro-tro decorations, an indispensable blessing!
