A remarkable castle in Cape Coast, a Unesco World Heritage Site and a must-see in Ghana.

Cape Coast Fort is an absolute must-see in Ghana. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts over 4,000 visitors a year! The castle is one of the country's most popular sights. Construction of the fort began in 1653, with the Swedes (it was then called Carolusborg). The castle was subsequently extended by successive owners, until 1665, when it was definitively transformed into a castle by the English. The impressively large and solid building served as the seat of British government until 1877. Slaves were confined here in appalling conditions. The governor, on the other hand, had sumptuous apartments overlooking the sea. An almost frightening discrepancy between the conditions of men living in the same time and place. The château houses a museum presenting the history of slavery, as well as the history of the country as a whole, and of the Central Region in particular. A plaque commemorates President Obama's visit to this place of pilgrimage for the descendants of American slaves on July 9, 2009. In short, an unmissable visit.

A vast courtyard adjoining the main entrance houses an interesting arts and crafts market. Here you'll find the classic souvenir gifts, but also a few more original handicrafts, as well as unique paintings and distinctive clothing.

Even if smaller Than elmina it has an interesting small museum to visit before the tour starts . The guide was horrible because he joked arrogantly about the way White People treated the slaves
