CROAGH PATRICK
Sacred mountain with characteristic conical shape. Magnificent views over the whole bay from the summit, where there is a small chapel for pilgrims.
From the parking lot, a rocky path climbs gently upwards. The road is dotted with steps, occasionally crossed by sheep. The end of the ascent (764 m) is steeper, with slippery stone steps where it's hard to pass each other. But the view from the top is breathtaking! You can admire the Clew Bay archipelago, which is said to comprise as many islets as there are days in the year. Beware, however, of temperature changes: it's much colder and the wind blows up there. Allow 3 to 4 hours round trip.
Saint Patrick, the patron saint of the Irish and founder of Christianity, is supposed to have fasted at the top of the mountain for 40 days in 441. A fifth-century chapel on the summit rewards exhausted pilgrims with a mass. Every last Sunday in July, a pilgrimage takes place, known as "Garland Sunday". Some believers climb the mountain barefoot!
