BANTRY HOUSE
Historic residence of the Earls of Bantry, with a fine collection of tapestries, furniture, paintings and objets d'art.
Bantry House is the historic home of the Earls of Bantry. You will find a beautiful collection of eclectic objects: tapestries, furniture, paintings, objets d'art... Let's enter without further delay this dream house, then let's stroll in the Italian-inspired gardens which open onto the bay by a beautiful staircase.
In the hall, among the family portraits, a beautiful Russian reliquary containing a series of icons from the 15th and 16th centuries. The silver ones are remarkable: the meticulously painted faces appear behind the sculpted silver plate which represents draped bodies.
In the Rose Room , a superb Aubusson tapestry woven for Marie Antoinette on the occasion of her marriage to the Dauphin (Louis XVI), with a large medallion in the centre representing a gallant and pastoral scene (Fortune of Love).
The Gobelin's Room houses a grandiose tapestry by the Gobelins. It is surrounded by magnificent furniture.
Anteroom. More beautiful furniture. A letter from Nelson is drowned in the middle of an admirable series of engravings of Rome and Italy by... Piranesi and Tiepolo. A Cascade in Tivoli is to be contemplated.
The Dining Room, all in blue, is without doubt the most sumptuous room. It is decorated with a still life - fruit and vegetables - by Drydens. As for the faces of the two characters, they would have been painted by Rubens.
The library is more sober, even more austere, but what a space when one contemplates the gardens sloping down to the bay and adorned with a very Italian fountain.
