BLACK ABBEY
An abbey founded in 1225 by Dominican monks, a former court with a superb ceiling, a site steeped in history in Kilkenny.
The abbey was founded in 1225 by Dominican monks. Its official name is Abbey of The Most Holy Trinity, but it took on the nickname Black Abbey, due to the color of the habit worn by its monks. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII of England (between 1538 and 1541), Black Abbey was transformed into a court. Left derelict after the fall of Cromwell in 1650, it was restored in the 19th century. Architectural interest is limited, apart from a superb vaulted ceiling in gleaming wood and two fine stained-glass windows.
