Natural site to discover

Ready for a swim? The waters of Västervik are very clean and have the European blue flag label. So you don't have to go without! The locals will tell you that the best place to swim is 4 km north-east of the town: Gränsö Slott. Next to the hotel, there is something for everyone. There are sandy beaches, rocks, and promontories for diving. Another popular spot is located in the islets of the Lysingbad complex, east of the city centre, but only accessible to camping guests.

OLD CITY

Street square and neighborhood to visit

It is divided into two parts. In Gamla Öster (east), between the new St. Peter's Church and the waterfront, are concentrated lovely wooden houses separated by cobblestone streets. The medieval white church of St. Gertrude is the first building to be constructed on the present site of Västervik. On the other side, Gamla Norr is the oldest part of the city. Next to it is the oldest red house in the city. Along the cobblestone streets are traditional houses painted in bright colors.

NATURUM VÄSTERVIK

Museums

Here is first presented the very productive Passé naval past: the city yards produced, in the 80% th century, almost of the royal fleet of Gustav Vasa. Models and history skilfully remind local issues of these prosperous times. The Naturum, dedicated to local fauna and flora, is a tool for informing and raising awareness of the protection of the environment and respect for the sea. The ticket also gives access to a tower from the top of which the view is superb on the city, its port and its old castle.

VÄSTERVIK ARCHIPELAGO

Natural site to discover

To discover this magnificent archipelago, you can take boats that shuttle to the islands of Idö and Hasselö. The first is famous for its excellent restaurants and is a refuge for many city dwellers who own holiday cottages there (if you wander around a bit, you will discover some incredible houses, notice to the architecture lovers!) On Hasselö, you can go on beautiful hikes and rent quads to ride the roads of the island at full speed; a great experience for those who want to have a thrill!

FISHING VILLAGE OF HÄNDELÖP

Local history and culture

Twenty kilometers south-east of Västervik (round trip), this village of red and yellow houses built on the waterfront is one of the prettiest in Sweden, so you should not miss it! When the sun goes down, the light is superb... The amateurs of photography will leave fulfilled! Small more: this small village forms a triangle with the fishing villages of Nävelsö and Marsö, which are thus also to be visited if one is in search of picturesque!
