This castle, whose construction was ordered by Gustav Vasa in 1549, is today the governor's residence and the seat of the regional administration. It was here, in the Rikssalen, or State Hall, that Queen Christine renounced her crown. It was also within these walls that, in a fit of madness, Erik XIV had a number of influential nobles executed in 1567 (history remembers this event as the "Sture Murder"). In May 2025, a brand-new museum retracing the building's history opened its doors.
