The agency is an independent authority that acts on the basis of a government order and defines its terms of reference. It is funded by the central government and its main tasks are to submit proposals for environmental policy and legislation to the Swedish government and to ensure their implementation. The Agency provides expertise and advice on environmental and regulatory issues, and is in contact with other national agencies as well as regional and local authorities. It assesses the effectiveness of the various measures in achieving national environmental quality objectives and proposes new, more optimal measures.
