PYRAMIDE
A singular pyramid-shaped structure built between 1968 and 1973 with concrete columns and glass facades.
A remarkable presence in the heart of the Plateau, the Pyramid, now abandoned, is the work of Italian architect Rinaldo Olivieri. Owned by the State, it was built between 1968 and 1973 on twelve floors. In its time, it symbolized the prosperity of the "Ivorian miracle" carried by the coffee-cocoa duo. Its retro-futuristic architectural avant-gardism and its singular pyramidal shape make it one of the most surprising buildings on the Abidjan urban skyline. Its architecture is emblematic of the modernity of the late 1960s, marked by the apogee of Brutalism, an architectural movement that placed great importance on the aesthetics of the geometric structure and the raw material.
The structure of the building consists of exposed pyramidal columns made of concrete, which oppose its vertical circulation space. Adapting to tropical climatic conditions, the façades of the building are entirely made up of bay windows protected by a set of aluminium panels acting as sunbreakers. Inside, an impressive public staircase takes the form of an open tunnel, adopting the aesthetics of 1960s science fiction films. Unfortunately, the unsuitability of this building with its small rental space, high energy consumption and high maintenance costs hastened the desertion of its private and commercial spaces and a few years ago, the building was even declared unhealthy.
Quel dommage il héberge désormais les chauves souris qui sortent à la nuit tombante.
