ARBOREAN MONASTERY

Religious buildings
4/5
1 review

15 km from Cacica and Rădăuți, in the village of Arbore, this modest steepleless church was built in 1502 by Luca Arbore, governor of Suceava, who is buried here. The interior and exterior paintings were done in 1541 by Dragoș Coman, who favored all shades of green, especially blue-green. The frescoes, original in their more secular character, show a succession of small scenes, such as Genesis. You'll also see a beautiful iconostasis. A less imposing site than the neighboring monasteries, but more authentic.

SOLCA MONASTERY

Religious buildings

The Solca monastery dates back to 1614. Abandoned during the Austro-Hungarian period, it is now open to the public. You can appreciate the extensive fortification work carried out shortly after its construction. The church still stands proudly, with its classic Moldavian octagonal bell tower. Buses running between Rădăuți and Gura Humorului pass through here.
Poieni Solca, between Solca and Cacica, is a much more charming and picturesque village, home to many animals (barnyard, cows, cats...).

SALT MINE

Visit industry

A visit to the saltworks is well worth the effort: you have to climb more than 280 steps to reach the bottom! Along the long corridors, you'll see a chapel, a saltwater basin and an astonishing ballroom with parquet flooring and chandeliers. Period documents and photos tell the story of the mine. In operation since 1791, the saltworks is still in use. At a depth of some 90 meters, beneath the part that can be visited, miners continue to extract salt. The result is a pervasive odor, which may bother certain sensitive organisms.
