RIO GRANDE – DESCENTE EN RAFTING
Rio Grande River, the best rafting spot in Jamaica, to visit in Port Antonio.
It's a must-do activity: Jamaican rafting on the Rio Grande, Jamaica's largest river. In other words, a leisurely descent on a bamboo raft. These are the gentle rapids, not at all the rafting mode you'd expect from us, sitting on inflatable tubes attached to a rope. This activity is offered on several of the island's rivers. The Rio Grande stands out for the majesty of its scenery and the power of the river. Long, narrow bamboo rafts 4 to 5 meters long once plied this river, carrying bunches of bananas down from the plantations to the loading docks at Port Antonio. The activity was popularized by the region's first tourists, in particular Hollywood actor Errol Flynn, who organized raft races to the delight of his famous guests.
But you can't become a raft captain. While they can steer their long, frail craft effortlessly through the meandering river, the task requires long training and excellent physical condition (which justifies the rather high price of the excursion, as in addition to the descent, an assistant will have to raise the raft for 4 hours!) If you're a couple, don't forget to exchange a good-luck kiss in Lovers' Cove, named after Errol Flynn. A bit kitsch, but fun!
The experience. The rafts are equipped with a comfortable bench seat, and most have sound systems (although you can ask to have the music turned off). The ride, which lasts between 2h30 and 3h, takes place in a sumptuous setting of wild tropical vegetation, in deep silence punctuated by birdsong. Stop for a swim, take your time! The lunch option includes a barbecued meal prepared by the village women on the banks of the river (recommended).
Tip. Choose a short or long descent, depending on your taste and budget. Since 2023, the authorities have set official prices to combat unofficial (and therefore illegal) captains . Entrance fees are payable at the Rafter Rest office (below), where you leave your car, or at Berrydale, at the top of a winding road where you board. If you're not motorized, the tours offer hotel pick-up, but it's expensive. Otherwise, negotiate a local cab to Berridale. In high season, book well in advance, as the captains are all very busy!
