COURT BUILDING

Court located in a small red brick building topped by an octagonal turret, to be visited in Morant Bay.
A veritable pocket courthouse, this little red-brick building is topped by an octagonal turret and flanked by a double flight of side stairs. The building dates back to the end of the 19th century and replaced the one burnt down by insurgents during the island's last major rebellion. The courthouse was also more recently destroyed by fire in 2007. In front of the courthouse, the statue of Paul Bogle, created by Edna Manley, the grande dame of Jamaican sculpture, has great symbolic value and a naive aesthetic.
