Pic des Aiguilles Noires offers a fabulous view of Brazil's three states: Rio, São Paulo and Minas Gerais

The Pico das Agulhas Negras, or Black Needles peak in French, rises to almost 2,900 m. It is certainly the must for hiking in the Itatiaia Park. It is here that one becomes fully aware of the potential of mountain ecotourism in Brazil, just a few hours drive from Rio de Janeiro. The climb to the top is quite arduous, but it offers a fabulous view of Brazil's three most populous states: Rio (you can see Guanabara Bay in the distance on a clear day), São Paulo and Minas Gerais.
