Open-air museum exhibiting fossils of organic materials such as shells, and limestone of anthropic origin
Open-air museum that exhibits fossils. "Sambaqui" comes from the indigenous Tupi word "tamba'kï", which means "shell deposit". It is a mound of organic and calcareous materials of anthropic origin (in fact a tumulus), which, under the effect of the weather, undergo a chemical fossilization: the rain dissolves the shells of the mollusks, the calcium penetrates the structure and petrifies the deposit. One speaks about "civilization of the sambaquis".
