MUSEU DO SAMBAQUI DA BEIRADA
Open-air museum exhibiting fossils of organic materials such as shells, and limestone of anthropic origin
This open-air museum is dedicated to the Sambaquis civilization. Fossils are on display. The word "Sambaqui" comes from the indigenous Tupi word "tamba'kï", meaning "shell deposit". This is a mound of organic and calcareous materials of anthropic origin (in fact, a tumulus), which undergo chemical fossilization when exposed to the elements: rain dissolves the shells of molluscs, calcium penetrates the structure and petrifies the deposit.
