From the airport to the city centre Marrakech

The Marrakech-Menara international airport (ranked among the world's most beautiful) is about 6 km southwest of the city center. An Alsa shuttle bus takes you directly to the airport. The fare is 30 DH one way and 50 DH round trip, and it passes through four strategic points: Place Jemaâ el Fna, Guéliz, the train station and the bus station. The other option is to take a small yellow cab with a single, official fare: 80 DH for zone 1 during the day and 120 DH for zone 2 beyond Oued Issil. At night, these prices rise to 120 and 180 DH respectively. On arrival, pay at the Kech-cab counter as you exit the terminal on the left, thus putting an end to any scam.

Arrival by train Marrakech

The train station is very central and is located in the modern district of Gueliz. Remarkable by its architecture with its sumptuous facade inspired by the monumental doors of the medina, it deserves in itself that one stops there. From there, if you travel, you can reach almost all the major cities of the country. Apart from the railway lines, the network is completed by Supratours' long-distance buses. Their offices are next to the station on the left. Timetables and fares can be consulted and purchased directly on the national website (www.oncf.ma). Example: to go to Casablanca, nine direct departures are offered between 5am and 9pm, for a journey time of 4 hours.

Public transport Marrakech

The bus company in Marrakech is called Alsa (www.alsa.ma). The network, which covers 45 lines in the city and its region, has several electric buses since the organization of the COP22. One takes his ticket directly when getting on the bus and the first fare is 3 DH for a short trip. To facilitate travel at a lower cost, there is now the Ikhlas card, which can also be purchased on board. Its price is 15 DH and it can be recharged in 5 DH increments. This card is not nominative, so it can be used by several people.

With a driver Marrakech

The easiest way to get around, and certainly the most practical, is to use the little mustard-colored cabs. As a reminder, these cabs are collective and have multiple meters (3 in number), enabling them to load a maximum of three passengers. Don't be surprised if your driver stops to refill his vehicle. However, this does not apply to the trip to the airport. The very affordable fare starts at 1.70 DH, with a minimum charge of 7 DH. There are thousands of them in Marrakech, and a gesture is enough to stop them. If, however, you'd like a more personalized service, there's the Taxis Verts company, operational 24 hours a day, every day. The fare is that of the meter, plus a supplement of 10 DH.

By car Marrakech

If you've opted for the freedom of a rental car, there are private parking lots all over town. They have the advantage of being kept at a very affordable rate. The authorities have recently erected signs at the entrances showing the statutory prices set by the city (2 DH per day). On the streets, you'll also find guards (in yellow vests) who divide up the sidewalks and zones, helping you to park and keeping an eye on your vehicle. There's no official rate for this kind of "valet parking", it's left to your own judgment, but whatever the parking time, it'll be the same. Don't forget that this job is a real money-maker.

Tourist traps Marrakech

Don't give in to haggling when taking a cab in Marrakech. Drivers are obliged to turn on their meter, and this is taken very seriously by the Prefecture, which keeps a close eye on them and can withdraw their license. Always ask for the meter, but always remain courteous. If a driver says it's broken, you should know that he'd be banned from driving if that were the case. In view of the abusive practices of recent years, and in order to make the city a pleasant place for everyone, there is even a complaints number on the table summarizing current rates, which must be affixed to the right-hand side of the windscreen. Don't hesitate to use it if you have to deal with a recalcitrant or dishonest driver.
