Neo-Gothic castle built between 1882 and 1884 with murals depicting life in the Rhine region in medieval times.
Built between 1882 and 1884 for a wealthy banker, Baron Stephan von Sarter, Drachenburg Castle is the youngest of the Rhine castles. From an architectural style that was furious at the time - the Gothic - the castle was above all impressing its guests. Siegfried, hero of the Nibelungen legend, is depicted on the east side and in the Nibelung hall. Very beautiful wall frescoes evoking life in the Rhine region in medieval times. Behind the castle is the Museum of the History of Nature Protection (Stiftung Naturschutzgeschichte), narrating the development of the ecological conscience of humanity!
