Gothic town hall built on the foundations of a imperial palace with a guard and residential tower.
It stands on the site of the former imperial hall, or Aula Regia, dating from the 9th century. Under Charlemagne, the building was connected directly to the cathedral, forming an immense palace in accordance with the emperor's wishes; all that remains today is the Granus tower, which served both as a watchtower and a dwelling. In the 14th century, a Gothic town hall was built on the foundations of the imperial palace. In the 19th century, the original style was revived after centuries of architectural alterations.
