This cathedral in Aachen was Charlemagne's final resting place and his tomb in 814.
Witness to thirteen centuries of Christianity in Northern Europe, the chapel was the brainchild of one man: Charlemagne. His idea was to create a sacred center for his empire. The Church of St. Mary was built in the last years of the 8th century, combining Byzantine and ancient architectural styles. The impact of the new church on its contemporaries was enormous! In 814, the cathedral became Charlemagne's final resting place, and his tomb can still be seen there. In 1978, it became the first German monument to be recognized by Unesco.

L'intérieur de la cathédrale est très surprenant avec son marbre vert, inhabituel dans un tel édifice. Seul le dôme se visite. L'entrée est gratuite.
