This splendid fortified complex perched on a sandstone cliff is at least a thousand years old. The Romanesque basilica that dominates the complex dates back to 1129. This is St. Servatius Church, one of the largest Romanesque basilicas in the former East Germany. The interior has been largely transformed into a Gothic style; 1938, the Nazis wanted to rehabilitate the Romanesque choir, the church also contains a treasure chamber. In the crypt is the tomb of the German Emperor Henry I. The representative buildings and the castle surrounding St. Servatius are mostly Renaissance buildings. Climb up the Schlossberg and visit the castle museum, which traces its history from the Emperor's residence to the court life of the 17th and 18th centuries. The site offers superb views of the city.
