ALTE SYNAGOGUE - OLD SYNAGOGUE
This th century synagogue, miraculously preserved until today, is now a museum. It allows you to visit the interior of this beautiful building, very well placed. On the floor, in the prayer room, are exposed to religious objects, including the medieval scrolls of the Torah and the largest known Hebrew Bible, as well as the "Jewish oath of Erfurt", dating from the th century and is the oldest Jewish oath in the preserved German. In the basement, the Treasury hall allows, with magnifiers, to admire jewellery objects that belonged to the Jewish community in Erfurt. The th-century wedding ring, pure gold, is the highlight of the exhibition. The synagogue was converted into a warehouse and then a restaurant after 1349 and the expulsion of the Jews from Erfurt. The Nazis did not know that the building was originally a synagogue, and it was able to spend the period smoothly, unlike most other synagogues in the country. It was rediscovered in the 1980 s and restoration work was successfully undertaken to remove the «gastronomic» design and to revive the Jewish elements.
