Along Breiter Weg, a pink building stands out in this ocean of grey concrete: it is the Grüne Zitadelle, in other words the green citadel. This curious building is the last work of the Austrian architect Hundertwasser. It was built in 2005. The roof is covered with vegetation, hence the name of the place. No two windows are alike. Tenants are responsible for the proper maintenance of vegetation. Some trees are planted in the middle of the dining room of some apartments, a wish of the architect, and tenants must take care of them. The building can be seen from afar with its roof enhanced with large golden pearls, its multicoloured columns, its undulating walls... The place looks like a big birthday cake. That's a bit of a surprise! The roof, with its 4,000 m2 of vegetation, allows nature to regain its rights, following the architect's favourite theme, ecology.
The premises include a kindergarten, a pastry shop, a café, apartments, offices, shops and even a hotel: the artHOTEL Magdeburg.
