AUENWALD (LEIPZIG RIPARIAN FOREST)
This river valley forest, which once covered the whole of South Leipzig, is ideal for walking and cycling.
This is Leipzig's green lung, also spelled Auwald, literally "river valley forest". In the past, the riparian forest (or ripisylve, i.e. a forest bordering a watercourse and its natural flood zone, associated with marshy terrain and partly with its feet in the water) covered the whole of southern Leipzig. A wild, beautiful area, where Leipzigans love to walk and cycle. To the south is a wildlife park featuring local species.
