Several magnificent defensive towers remain ancient fortifications, all of the th century; notably La (Reichenstrasse), Nicolaiturm or Lauenturm. Bautzen is sometimes called the "city of towers"… Another emblem of the city, its castles: The th century Neue Wasserkunst, which also resembles a medieval tower, and above all the Alte Wasserkunst, the th century, below the Michaeliskirche church, which can be visited. These two buildings form a very beautiful medieval ensemble of apparent stones, steeped in rock.
