This highly controversial bridge was opened in 2013 to the east of the Neustadt. It is supposed to reduce traffic problems in the historic centre of the city. Prior to its construction, the Elbe Valley was a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which took away this title in 2009, believing that the bridge spoils the river landscape and the view over the old town. Many defenders of nature also vehemently oppose this construction on a site inhabited by a species of bat unique in the world. The Waldschlösschen has four lanes and cost EUR 180 million.
