A cubic building of elegant proportions, the new Dresden synagogue was built between 1998 and 2001 on the site of the former synagogue. The latter had been built in 1840 by Gottfried Semper, architect of the Dresden Opera House, before suffering the horrors of history twice: destroyed by the Nazis in 1938, what remained of it was then destroyed in 1945 by Allied bombardments. There was no question for the architects Wandel, Hoefer and Lorch und Hirsch of rebuilding the synagogue in the same way - this would have been a denial of the abuses committed against Jews before and during the Second World War. The new building, whose shape recalls the first Jewish temples, won the World Architecture Award in 2001 for its style, and two years later a second place in the German Architecture Prize. The new synagogue can only be visited by appointment and in German (if you choose this option, gentlemen, you will need to cover your head). If you are short of time, do not hesitate to admire it at least from the outside, at the end of a walk on the Brühl Terrace, for example.
