MARKTPLATZ - MARKET SQUARE
Wismar market square is the largest in Northern Germany. We will see the past glory of the merchants of the city by observing their cossues residences. In particular, the Alter Schwede (old Swede), a Gothic home in red brick, the oldest house in Wismar. It is also a model of its kind, with its floor-mounted roof and its window-mounted facade. His name, which dates back to the th, is in memory of the Swedish presence of the city, even if the house is before him. Another impressive building is the Rathaus of classical style dating back to 1817. It occupies almost one side of the square. Today, in the Rathaus cellar, you can visit the permanent exhibition "Wismar, Images of a City", which recounts the history of the building and the city in general. Mention is also made of the Renaissance Wasserkunst pavilion, 12 angles, which supplied the city with water until the end of the th century.
