Founded in 1919 by James Henry Breasted, the first American to earn a doctorate in Egyptology, the Oriental Institute is a museum and the archaeological research center of the University of Chicago. It is dedicated to the Near East and sponsors numerous field missions. Seven galleries trace the habits and customs of ancient Eastern civilizations. A huge statue of Tutankhamen marks the entrance to the Egyptian gallery, where several mummies are stored.
