Smaller and less frequented than its neighbor Starved Rock, Matthiessen State Park offers comparable scenery with its sandstone canyons, waterfalls and forests. It offers wilder trails for peaceful, authentic hikes, far from the hustle and bustle. The park also boasts an equestrian campground, much appreciated by horse lovers. There is no lodge, but several picnic areas are available. An excellent alternative when Starved Rock is crowded, especially at weekends and in high season.
