MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY (M.S.I.)
Interactive science museum with a giant model of the Loop with its streets, subways and skyscrapers.
The Museum of Science and Industry is one of the most emblematic and visited museums in the United States. It is housed in the impressive Palace of Fine Arts, built in 1893 for the Chicago World's Fair. After briefly housing the Field Museum, the site remained unoccupied until Julius Rosenwald, owner of Sears, was inspired by Munich's Deutsches Museum to create an interactive science museum open to all. The M.S.I. opened its doors in 1933, with the aim of making science fun and educational.
Today, the museum is spread over several levels, and features captivating exhibits on topics such as space, medicine, energy, climate, artificial intelligence and robotics. There's a life-size reproduction of a coal mine, suspended aircraft in the main hall, spectacular meteorological experiments and the impressive German submarine U-505, captured during the Second World War and presented in an immersive scenography.
Also not to be missed is the gigantic model railway that recreates the center of Chicago, the Loop, with its skyscrapers and bustling streets, before taking mini-trains on a journey through the Rockies to Seattle.
Since 1995, the building has been listed as one of Chicago's historic monuments. Allow at least half a day for your visit, especially with children or science enthusiasts.
