LINCOLN PARK ZOO
Free U.S. Zoo with a farm, great for a walk and a great view of the Chicago skyline.
One of the last free zoos in the United States and one of the oldest, Lincoln Park Zoo is home to a wide variety of animals. Nestled between the Lincoln Park neighborhood and Lake Shore Drive, in an ocean of greenery, away from the noise, it attracts crowds who come to admire hundreds of animals grouped by category in several pavilions. You can watch polar bears swimming in their tanks through a glass window, or admire the extravagant colors of toucans. As you stroll along the wide aisles, feeding the hundreds of squirrels that come from all over, it's not unusual to hear the roar of tigers or lions basking in the sun. Seals and penguins scramble to cool off in their ponds, while antelopes and zebras take shelter in the greenery of their enclosures. The zoo's final attraction is the Regenstein Center for African Apes, home to chimpanzees and gorillas of impressive size. The zoo is also a center for research and study of great apes for students at Chicago universities and for researchers working on wildlife protection programs.
At the heart of the zoo is a Wisconsin prairie farm. Children can touch the animals and help milk the cows.
Don't miss the Nature Boardwalk, on the south side of the park, which offers a superb view of the Chicago skyline.
