Water has obviously played an important role in the history of this part of the country known as "the great clay area". Once a clergyman's agricultural dream, the area quickly became a forestry industry. Early 20th century settlers traded their spades for saws to clear their land. They sold the wood to American companies located along the rivers. Hearst is the self-proclaimed "moose capital of Canada", the favourite prey of the hunters who come here. Fishing and many water sports are available in Fushimi Lake Park and canoeing on the Missinaibi River.
