Located just southeast of the capital city of Yellowknife, the city of Dettah is accessible by a 27-kilometre summer road otherwise known as the Ingraham Trail. In winter, it is also accessible by an ice road of approximately 6 kilometres that crosses the Great Slave Lake. Dettah means "Burnt Point" in the Tlicho language, the local population of the area, and refers to a traditional fishing camp used by the Dene, an ethnic group from northwestern Canada, for hundreds of years. There is nothing special to do there, as there are no accommodations, restaurants or shops, except to immerse oneself in the culture of the local people who still live largely from hunting, trapping and fishing.
