Its name comes from the "Yellow Knives", an ancient Native American population that inhabited the area. Today, it is the capital of the Northwest Territories with its 20,000 inhabitants. Located on the shores of Great Slave Lake, 512 km south of the Arctic Circle, the city has grown since the first discovery of gold in 1898, during the Alaskan Gold Rush. The city enjoys a subarctic climate, characterized by long, cold winters and short, cool summers. It is therefore a paradise for nature activities, a perfect place to observe the midnight sun, the northern lights, and an interesting mix of cultures.
