HARBOUR AND OLD TOWN

The city is built in an amphitheatre around a deep harbour, 1.6 km long and 800 meters wide, which communicates with the Atlantic through a narrow channel called Narrows. This channel, 200 meters wide, is wedged between 150 meter high escarpments that rise to form Signal Hill. On the edge of the port, Harbour Drive runs along the docks where ships of all nationalities are anchored. Behind the harbor, on the steep slopes, are the streets of the old town, lined with charming wooden houses with bright colors and mansard roofs.
