The community of Deer Lake is a major intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway, which continues to Grand Falls-Windsor, and Route 430, which leads to Gros Morne National Park and the northern tip of Newfoundland. Deer Lake is a fish-filled lake with beautiful beaches including Deer Lake Beach. Just outside of Deer Lake, the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) passes through pine, fir and spruce forests that are home to herds of caribou and stretch around Sandy Lake and then over Birchy Lake. The road skirts around Halls Bay, which is a fjord leading to Notre Dame Bay, a lacework of myriad islands.
